Parents & Teachers go up against Summer Camps

Punjab Government allowed private and public schools to start summer camps during summer vacations.

The provincial government issued a notification allowing private and government schools to hold compulsory summer camps from 7:30am to 10:30am for class 5th, 8th, 9th and 10th from June 1 to August 14.

But the parents had a point of view that the summer vacations are given to provide relief from hot weather of June and July. They said that summer camps enable private schools to charge extra fees and earn money. Some of the parents said that during summer vacations they plan to spend holidays with relatives but because of summer camp they have to change their plans. This is unfair to start summer camps for class 5th and 8th.

The teachers of government schools also expressed resentment over the decision, saying summer camps in government educational institutes for class 5th and 8th was unjustifiable.

On the other hand, private school owners said the decision to hold the summer camps was in the best interest of the students. “The students of class 5th, 8th, 9th and 10th have suffered a lot during the last few days as textbooks were not available in the market and classes started late,” said Ibrar Ahmed Khan, the president of All Pakistan Private Schools Management Association, Rawalpindi.

Tax Relief to low salaried people

Government is considering a tax concession to low salaried employees in the coming budget to be presented on Friday.

According to official sources, the income tax exemption limit in this category is proposed to be increased form Rs300,000 to Rs350,000 per annum. This limit had been raised to Rs300,000 from Rs200,000 last year and to Rs200,000 from Rs180,000 in 2009-10.

An income tax official said on Tuesday that raising the tax exemption limit would reduce the impact of rising prices, especially of food items, on employees.

Experts have suggested the introduction of a new category of senior income taxpayers, above the age of 70, for whom the exemption limit may be raised to Rs500, 000.

According to the official, the increase in the exemption limit for senior citizens and women is likely because of the decline in the value of the rupee.

Samsung to stick with Google for its tablets

Samsung Electronics is the world’s second-largest cellphone maker after Finland’s Nokia but trails Apple’s iPhone and iPad in smartphones and tablets.

The iPad surprised competitors with the success of its launch early last year. Samsung responded by choosing Android for its tablets and introduced the seven-inch (17.8 centimetre) Galaxy Tab in October 2010 to take on Apple.

Samsung will launch new versions of the Galaxy Tab this summer in an 8.9-inch and 10.1-inch model. Both will run the latest version of Android, known as Honeycomb.

Samsung expects its tablet shipments to rise about fivefold this year to 7.5 million. Market data provider IHS iSuppli forecast in April that Apple’s iPad shipments would reach 39.7 million this year.

“Android is the fastest-growing platform and the market direction is headed toward Android so we’re riding the wave,” said Younghee Lee, senior vice president of sales and marketing. (AFP)

Madame Tussauds Museum refused to wax Kareena Kapoor

Many bollywood stars were given an honor to build their waxed statue at Madame Tussauds Museum. Management got thousands of letters and emails for Kareena Kapoor to get waxed. But this year Kareena kapoor missed this chance because according to museum management the new figure will not get the attraction as they recently launched statue of another bollywood star Hrithic Roshan.

According to a statement issued by the museum, “Madame Tussauds London can corroborate that a figure of Kareena Kapour will not be launched at the attraction this year. In January of this year a figure of Hrithik Roshan was launched, so we are extremely much concentrating all our efforts on this activity for 2011. Madame Tussauds now operates 12 global attractions and are delighted that bollywood fans are able to visit their idols in other locations; we are in no doubt an announcement regarding the next bollywood star to have the honour of being immortalised at Madame Tussauds will go behind shortly when it is suitable to do so.”
